Don’t Agree with Miss USA Pageant Question

One of the top topics on the news earlier this week was Miss California Carrie Prejean’s response to Perez Hilton‘s Miss USA Pageant same-sex marriage question. Perez asked if other states should follow Vermont’s recent recognition of same-sex marriage and Carrie Prejean (Miss California) gave her opinion; she believes in opposite-sex marriage. Perez later went on to make a video and called her a “stupid bitch” for her answer.

Being that same-sex marriage is as touchy a subject as religion and politics, I think the question should never have been asked. The Miss USA Pageant is a nationally broadcasted show, which means Miss California was backed into a corner for everyone to watch. People are either for same-sex marriage or against it, her answer was bound to anger someone.

What’s worst, Wednesday morning, NBC’s Al Roker invited Miss USA 2009 North Carolina’s Kristen Dalton to the Today Show and asked her what she thought of Perez Hilton’s question! Really, Al? As if people saying that that question was the reason Miss California didn’t win wasn’t enough, you asked the already-crowned Miss USA the same controversial question! Why? Are you trying to stir up more backlash? Her response was that she believes in same-sex marriage.

The topic is extremely touchy and I completely disagree with the pageant’s use of it. I understand that they want to ask the ladies more challenging questions, after all, they are role models, but bringing up controversial issues is the wrong way to go about it.
